Here is a list of the most common pests you can deal with yourself should you choose:
Wasps: Wasps are easily dealt with by purchasing an effective poison (usually in powder form) and then applying around the wasps nest. All the wasps should be dead within a few weeks.
Vermin (Rats/Mice): Rats and mice are disease carriers and can live within the home or around dustbins or compost heaps, or anywhere they have a chance of getting food. Try to not leave food around and the vermin will most likely disappear on their own, however if they don’t poisons are available to kill them off.
Ants: Ants form vast colonies numbering hundreds of thousands, and they can come indoors through the tiniest of entrance points, so you really have little chance of stopping them entering your home. The only options is to try and find where they are coming from (often a crack in the ground someplace in the garden), and apply a store-bought poison as advised on the label.
Fleas: More often than not, fleas are due to a pet such as a dog or a cat. Treatment for the animal will come in the form of a specialist shampoo purchased from a pet store or from the vets.
Many poisons and chemicals are harmful to pets so it is extremely important to ensure you buy one which doesn’t harm you’re pet, and also to inform any professional pest control experts you are dealing with you have a pet and they will try and bring a poison/chemical which won’t affect your pet.
